Four Circuits, Two Ways to Switch

Tap the keypad or the key fob — both control the same four garden circuits and stay in sync, exactly like a paired Wise Box install. Or fire every circuit at once with All On / All Off.

Two-way switching: the keypad and key fob control the same four circuits. Press a button on either device and both update together — exactly like a paired Wise Box installation.

A well-lit garden is one of the best things you can do for a home — but the switching is where most schemes come unstuck. Spike lights, wall lights, a feature wash and LED strip usually want to be controlled separately, and running a control cable back to a switch inside the house means trenching, chasing walls and an electrician. Wireless control solves all of that. This guide explains how to control garden lighting the easy way — switching and dimming every outdoor circuit from a keypad, a key fob or automatically at dusk — using Wise Controls Wise Box receivers, with no rewiring and no Wi-Fi required.

    The Garden Control Problem

Outdoor lighting is rarely a single circuit. A typical garden scheme layers several: spike lights in the borders, wall lights by the doors, an uplit feature tree or façade wash, and a run of LED strip along a wall or step. Each of those wants to be switched — ideally dimmed — on its own, so you can have just the path lit on a weeknight, or the whole garden up for entertaining.

Wiring that conventionally is the hard part. Every circuit needs a switch line run back to a plate inside the house, which means digging trenches, chasing plaster and a lot of cable. Add a switch by the back door, another by the patio, and the cabling multiplies. It's the single most common reason a good garden lighting design gets value-engineered down to "all on one switch".

Wireless control removes the control cabling entirely. The fittings still need a power feed, but how you switch them no longer depends on where the cable runs — because the command travels by radio instead.

    How Wireless Control Works

Wise Box is a wireless receiver that lives near the fittings — in a weatherproof enclosure outdoors, or in a cupboard or plant room. It takes a permanent power feed and switches the circuits connected to it. Instead of a switch line, it listens for commands over radio frequency (RF) from any Wise transmitter: a wall keypad, a handheld key fob, a PIR or a dusk-til-dawn sensor.

Because the link is pure RF rather than Wi-Fi, there's no router, no hub and no broadband dependency — the keypad talks straight to the receiver. A 4-channel Wise Box switches or dims four independent circuits, each on its own button, so the spike lights, wall lights, feature wash and strip all get their own control from a single enclosure. And because every keypad and fob can talk to the same receiver, you get genuine two-way switching: press the fob in your pocket or the keypad by the door, and both stay in sync. Try it in the demo above.

    Wise Box Control Products

Wise Box is a British-made wireless platform, and it's the range we most often specify for controlling outdoor lighting. Because it works over radio rather than fixed wiring, you can add keypads and sensors anywhere without chasing walls or trenching cable. Here's how the pieces fit together.

    Wise Box Receivers

The receiver is the heart of the system — a multi-channel switch/dimmer pack that takes the power feed and drives the circuits. Outdoor versions are weatherproof for permanent external installation; the 1-channel Wise Box One handles a single high-load circuit, while the 4-channel V4 runs a whole garden scheme from one box.

    Keypads, Key Fobs & Remotes

The transmitters are what you actually press. Battery-powered wireless keypads fix to any wall without a back box — perfect by the back door or out on the patio — and handheld key fobs put the same control in your pocket. Pair as many as you like to the same receiver; every one can drive every circuit, and they all stay in sync.

    Outdoor Sensors & Timers

For lighting that looks after itself, add a trigger. A dusk-til-dawn sensor brings the garden up as the light fades and off again at sunrise; a PIR fires the path or driveway on approach; a built-in time clock runs scheduled on/off without any Wi-Fi. They pair to the same receiver as the keypads, so manual and automatic control work side by side.

    How a Circuit Is Paired

One of the best things about Wise Box is that there's no software, no commissioning laptop and no hub. Pairing a keypad button to a receiver channel is done from the device itself, in a few seconds:

    1. Power the receiver. Wire the outdoor circuits to the Wise Box channels and give it a permanent live feed.
    2. Hold to learn. Put the channel into pairing mode on the receiver, then press the keypad or key-fob button you want to assign to it.
    3. The receiver beeps. A single beep confirms the button is now paired to that channel — stored locally on the receiver.
    4. Add more transmitters. Repeat with any number of keypads, fobs or sensors. Every paired device controls the same circuit, giving you two-way (or many-way) switching with no extra wiring.

    Hands-Off Automation

Manual control is only half the appeal. Once the circuits are on a Wise Box, you can layer automatic triggers so the garden runs itself:

    Dusk till dawn

A dusk-til-dawn sensor reads ambient light and brings the chosen circuits up as evening falls, then off at sunrise — so the garden is always lit when it should be, with nothing to remember. Ideal for wall lights and a low-level path scheme.

    Movement-triggered

A PIR sensor fires a circuit on approach — driveway floods, a side-return path or steps — and times out after a set period. Pair it to the same receiver as your keypad and you keep manual override whenever you want it.

    Scheduled & app control

A built-in time clock runs fixed on/off schedules with no Wi-Fi at all. And if you do want phone or voice control later, a Wise Daisy hub adds it on top — your keypads, fobs and sensors keep working exactly as before, with the app simply becoming one more way to fire the same circuits.

    Garden Control FAQ

Can I control garden lighting without trenching cables?

Yes. A wireless Wise Box receiver sits near the fittings and is controlled over radio by a keypad, key fob or sensor — so there's no control cable to run back to the house and no wall-chasing. Only the power feed to the fittings is wired.

    Does it need Wi-Fi?

No. Wise Box works on its own RF link, independent of your home Wi-Fi or broadband, so it keeps working through every internet outage. A dusk-til-dawn sensor can run the garden automatically with no app at all.

How many circuits can one receiver control?

A 4-channel Wise Box switches or dims four independent circuits at up to 5 amps each. For larger schemes, pair several receivers to the same keypad zone.

Can I control the same lights from more than one place?

Yes — pair as many keypads and fobs as you need. Every device controls the same circuits and they all stay in sync, so a keypad by the door and a fob in your pocket behave as one.

Is it suitable for permanent outdoor use?

Yes. The outdoor Wise Box variants are IP-rated for permanent external installation. Combine with a dusk-til-dawn sensor or time clock for automatic garden control.
