From statement floor lamps and table lamps to rechargeable cordless lamps — portable and freestanding lighting to suit every room.
Floor and table lamps are the most flexible tools in a lighting scheme — they can be moved, repositioned, and added without an electrician. Used correctly, they add warmth, depth, and character that ceiling lighting alone can't achieve.
Everything you need to know about choosing the right floor lamp, table lamp, or uplight for your space.
Consider the lamp's height relative to the room — a tall arc lamp over a sofa suits high ceilings; a low reading lamp works in compact spaces. Position floor lamps at the edge of seating groups, not behind furniture, for maximum effect.
The lampshade base should sit at eye level when you're seated (approximately 60–70cm from the floor for a table lamp on a side table). The shade should be roughly two-thirds the height of the base for good proportion.
A good desk lamp should have an adjustable arm, a shade that directs light downward without glare, and ideally a colour temperature of 4000K for focused work. Dimmable versions allow you to reduce brightness for evening use.
Battery-powered rechargeable lamps are increasingly popular for dining tables, hospitality, and outdoor entertaining. Most run 6–20 hours per charge. Choose IP-rated versions if using outdoors.
Recessed floor uplights are installed flush into the floor, casting light upward to wash walls and highlight artwork or plants. Freestanding uplighters achieve a similar effect with no installation.
Use floor and table lamps to create a third layer of light alongside ceiling downlights and wall lights. Aim for light sources at three different heights — ceiling, wall, and floor/table — in any well-lit living space.
White or cream shades diffuse light evenly and maximise lumen output. Dark or opaque shades create dramatic pools of light and shadow — effective for accent but not for reading. Fabric shades produce warmer light than glass or metal.
2700K (warm white) is ideal for living rooms and bedrooms — it creates a relaxing, inviting atmosphere. 3000K suits kitchen or office use. Avoid cool white (4000K+) in living spaces where lamps are used for ambience.
In-ground LED profiles house LED tape flush with the floor surface, creating subtle path lighting along skirting boards, staircases, or walkways. Available in aluminium for durability and heat dissipation.
